Charles T. Whitlock

Whitlock, Charles T., Colonel, U.S. Army Ordnance Corps (Retired), 99, of Henrico, VA completed his mission on April 14, 2019. Chuck was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Esther “Tess” Whitlock. Surviving are daughters, Kathy Whitlock of New York; Jennifer Boyer of Virginia; son, Terry Whitlock and wife, Becky, of Georgia; five grandchildren, Megan McLain, Christopher Whitlock, Danielle Haskell, Chase Boyer & Sean Boyer; four great-grandchildren and longtime personal friends, Peg and Jerry Petersen.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, Chuck enlisted in the Army in 1941 prior to WWII and initially served as a training NCO for the war mobilization effort. In January 1943 he graduated from the U.S. Army Ordnance Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Aberdeen Proving Ground and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Assignments included wartime service in the Pacific Theater of Operations including New Guinea, the Philippine Islands and Japan. Following WII, his assignments included the Panama Canal Zone, European Command HQ’s in France, Commander of 703rd Maintenance Battalion (3rd Infantry Division) in Germany, Korea and stateside installations including the Pentagon, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Cumberland and Fort Lee. After 33 years of active duty, he retired at Fort Lee in 1974 as Deputy Commandant, U.S. Army Logistics Management Center. Chuck shined as loyal chauffeur and caregiver for his wife, Tess, throughout her long struggle with cancer. Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.
Friends will be received from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 19, 2019 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 103 S. Adams Street, Petersburg, VA 23803. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the funeral home. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Church of the Sacred Heart, 9300 Community Lane, South Prince George, VA 23805.
