Charlie Barefoot

d. April 20, 2005

Charlie A. Barefoot, Sr. 72, of Dinwiddie died Wednesday, April 20, 2005. He was born the son of the late William B. and Lola C. Barefoot in the outskirts of Fayetteville, NC in a small town called Rockfish. Raised on a horse farm where he developed a passion for riding and soon fell in love with the sport of rodeo. After serving in the U.S. Army in 1953 to 54 he moved to Petersburg, VA. He began his rodeo career at that time and also started a horseshoeing business while training to be a master plumber. Charlie owned and operated his own business, Quality Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning from 1978 to 1999. During this time Charlie continued to compete in Mid-Eastern Team Roping Association and the Virginia Cowboys Association. During his reign he won over thirty championship buckles and seventeen championship saddles. His championships spanned over four decades from 1966 to 1997. He was presented Lifetime Achievement Awards from both associations. Charlie was an enormous influence on the sport of rodeo and his wife, children and grandchildren continue the legacy with several championships of there own. Although his enthusiasm and zest for life will be sorely missed, his legacy will live on through all those he influenced and motivated to be their best and ?cowboy up?.
