Christine Lorraine Winbourne (née Wylie) passed away peacefully on August 24, 2018 surrounded by her family after a brave battle with long-term illness. She was born in Trenton, NJ on September 2, 1946 to loving parents William Henry and Gertrude Leary Wylie. After graduating from Trenton High School, she married Arthur Winbourne of Richmond, Virginia, who was an airman in the United States Air Force. They travelled extensively during the mid-1960s in Europe and the Middle East, visiting Rome, Beirut, Damascus, Ankarra, and the Holy Land, among other places. Upon their return to the United States, they lived briefly in Texas, then made their permanent home in the Richmond, VA area. She was a diligent worker and earned an Associate’s Degree in Sociology and held many positions, including at Commonwealth Labs, Bradlees Dept. Store, Whitehall Jewelry, and lastly, the Colonial Heights, VA Court System, from which she retired as Deputy Clerk of the District Court in 2016. She was a kidney transplant recipient and the family is eternally grateful for the anonymous organ donor that gave Christine 15 years of dialysis-free living. In her golden years, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and flying in the family Cessna 172.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother William Henry Wylie, Jr, son Clifton William Winbourne, and best friend Pauline Mikos. Following the death of her son in 1979 from leukemia, she became a tireless volunteer with the Association for the Study of Childhood Cancer (ASK), ultimately reaching the position of President of that organization and positively contributing to countless lives in the process.
She is survived by her husband Arthur, son Mark, daughter-in-law Melissa, grandson Weston, & granddaughter Olivia, cousin Rob Ervin and his wife Lin, many dear family members, goddaughter Courtney Cole Lang, close friends Karen Cole, Sandra Graham, Tom & Agnes Crockett, Diane & Rob Martinez, Dave & Amy Mikos and countless other friends. She was also very appreciative of her former coworkers at the Colonial Heights District Court and the Colonial Heights Sheriff’s Department. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, VA.
In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family requests that charitable donations be made in Christine’s name to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.
