Claude M. Flaherty, 82, died on March 9, 2005 in Richmond. The World War II Marine combat veteran of the Pacific and retired Hercules Plant Manager is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian Hill Flaherty. He additionally is survived by two sons Richard M. Flaherty and wife, Linda Doorfee Flaherty of Great Falls, VA and Scott L. Flaherty and wife, Carmen Flaherty of Disputanta, VA; two daughters Carol Flaherty Megrail and husband James L. Megrail of Wichita, KS and Ellen A. Flaherty of Austin, TX; grandson Andrew D. Megrail and wife Sondra Megrail of Wichita, KS; and granddaughter Alexandra K. Flaherty of Chester. A member of Chester Untied Methodist Church, he served on many church boards and committees. He taught Sunday school throughout his adult life. While his corporate career involved multiple transfers to various areas of the country, much of his active life was spent in Hopewell, where he was involved with a large number of community and charitable activities. On his retirement, he was presented a key to the city. He served as president of the Hopewell Manufacturers Association for eight years, president of the Hopewell Chamber of Commerce, director of the Virginia Manufacturers Association and a member of Governor Godwin?s Safety and Health Codes Commission. After his retirement, he was a charter member of the Tri-Cities chapter of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) serving two terms as its Chairman. He was appointed SCORE District Manager for the state of Virginia and served in that capacity for five years. Mr. Flaherty also took great pride in being a Mill Streamer for almost 70 years. A memorial service will be held in the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service at 4 PM on Saturday, March 12.
