Retired U.S. Army Colonel, John William Bucher of Chester, VA. died on May 18, 2006. Colonel Bucher obtained a BA from Temple University and MS from Penn State University and was chosen to attend the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Colonel Bucher was commissioned as a Second Lt. in the U.S. Army in 1971. Initially, Colonel Bucher entered the Army Reserve program and proceeded into the active Army in 1984. He served with various reserve units in Northeastern Pennsylvania, to include 814th Supply Company in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania and Supply and Maintenance Battalion in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Shortly after moving into active duty, Colonel Bucher served as an ROTC instructor at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. His time as an instructor was very rewarding, as he engaged and challenged those who ultimately became future leaders of the U.S. Military. Colonel Bucher went on to serve in the Logistics field of the U.S. Army. He and his family have been stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Fort Lee, Virginia and the U.S. Pentagon. During his tenure in the Army, Colonel Bucher was a true warrior and leader of soldiers. He was respected and loved by all his Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors and civilians that he served with until his retirement in 2003. Never one to stay idle, Colonel Bucher became a Logistician with SAIC. Those that knew John will miss his sense of humor and tolerant, loveable personality. As a youth he formed the band â??The Deltasâ? and was an accomplished guitarist. His respect of people of all walks of life was evident to all that knew him. Johnâ??s comical stories and vast knowledge of military history and world events entertained and fascinated many audiences. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered by all those he touched. He was the son of the late John Herbert Bucher and Sarah Barstler Bucher. John is survived by his son, John Richard Bucher of Chester, Virginia, Daughter, Ellen Elizabeth Bucher of Chester, Virginia and step-son, Tom Ropel of Atlanta, Georgia; nephews, John McAllen, Richard McAllen and Michael Ross McAllen; sister, Ellen Bucher McAllen; in addition to friend, Cindy Vaughn of Richmond. A visitation will be held on Mr. Bucherâ??s behalf at the J. T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Chesterfield, 3050 West Hundred Road, Chester, Virginia on Monday, May 22nd from 6 to 7 p.m., with a funeral service following at 7 p.m. Colonel Bucher will be buried with full Military Honors at Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia at a later date.
