Cortlandt Hunter Joyner, 73, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Chester, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2009. He was born in Hopewell, son of the late William Briggs Joyner and Martha Gibbs Joyner. Cortlandt graduated from Hopewell High School and later from Capital Engineering Institute in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1990 from IBM after 30 years, most of which was spent at the Richmond office. He was also active in service organizations where he had held the role of president for the Chester Jaycees, Chester Kiwanis, Norfolk School of Boat Building and Nautical Adventures. Cortlandt is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Dolores Elrod Joyner; daughter, Tamara Joyner Evans and husband, Jim; sons, William Pruitt Joyner and wife, Rachel and Robert Hunter Joyner, and wife Susan; grandchildren, Brandon Hunter Puster, Courtney C. Arnold and husband, John, Ryan Hunter Joyner, Chelsea Emma Joyner, Tamara Hope Joyner, Katelyn Malone Joyner, Seth Hunter Joyner and Hunter Louis Joyner; great-grandchild, Cheyne Joyner; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rev. and Mrs. Eugene O. Setchel. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, especially Antoinette, and the nurses and staff at Sentara Leigh Memorial. Friends will be received at the Chesterfield chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Monday, April 6, 2009 from 6 to 8 p.m. and also following the interment, at the residence of Tamara and Jim Evans. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with interment following in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester.
