The Honorable D. Carleton Mayes died on Monday, November 1, at his home in Dinwiddie, Virginia. Known by his nickname, “Gus,” he was graduated from Midway High School in 1932 and from Hampden-Sydney College in 1936, where he earned a B.S. Degree. After four years of service during WW II, he earned his Bachelor of Laws from Washington & Lee University in 1947. Judge Mayes was predeceased by his father, Dr. Dibrel Crowder Mayes and mother, Mary Allen Wheeler Mayes, of Church Road, Virginia and his brother, Maclin Mayes and wife, Louise D. Mayes. He was married to his loving wife, Elizabeth Long Mayes for 46 years, who predeceased him in 1993. Surviving him are his son, Robert A. Mayes of Lanexa, Virginia and his wife, Donna; his devoted daughter, Linda Mayes Crawford, and her husband, Shea, of Dinwiddie; five grandchildren, Anthony Shawn Chavis and his wife, Lynn of Raeford, N.C., Elizabeth W. Chavis of Shannon, N.C., Robin L. Chavis, II of Dinwiddie, Carleton Mayes of Harrisonburg, Virginia, and Robert C. Mayes, who is serving in the U. S. Army, and is stationed in Germany; two great-grandchildren, Shawn Chavis, II, and Shae Chavis both of North Carolina; and a longtime devoted friend of the family, Dorothy B. Wyatt of Dinwiddie. The family will receive friends at the family home on Wednesday and Thursday between 9:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M., and on Friday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 5th, at Blandford Cemetery, 319 South Crater Road, Petersburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donation to Hampden-Sydney College, to the Elizabeth Long Mayes Scholarship, P. O. Box 637, Hampden-Sydney, Virginia 23943-6037; the American Stroke Association, c/o the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060; to the Dinwiddie Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O.
