Dabney "Dee" E. Short III, 60, of Dinwiddie, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, January 22, 2024. Dee was born in Petersburg in 1963, and was the son of Nancy M. Wilkerson (Calvin), Stuart Short, and the late Dabney E. Short, Jr. Dee met the love of his life, Kim, in 1983, while spending time with friends in Petersburg, VA. You could always find Dee and Kim riding around in one of Dee's projects. Dee would never let Kim get too far out of his sight, he held her close to his side at all times. Excited to start their new lives together, the two would have been married for 38 years in August, 2024. Dee and Kim could not wait to start a family of their own, and their children, Kayla M. Short and Drew E. Short, were two of their greatest pleasures in life. Dee is survived by his brother, Gregory B. Short (Arti); nephews, Cameron and Colin Short and Dustin Helmer (Sarah); aunts and uncles, Carolyn Short, Joan Hock (Jack), Joyce Russell, and Barbara McCants (David); numerous cousins, friends, and Outer Banks beach family; his adopted son, Jacinto Hernandez-Mendez (Adriana) and their children, Logan and Ariadne. Dee attended Tidewater Academy and Petersburg High School before completing a General Mechanic Apprenticeship at John Tyler Community College. Dee was a man of all trades, he has held numerous jobs throughout his life; leading into retirement as the owner of Short's Lawn Care. Dee's greatest loves in life were his wife and children. Dee had a soft spot for his furry friends, treating each and every one like the valuable family member they were. One of Dee's best friends, was a chocolate Labrador Retriever, Deuce. Dee had a passion for drag cars that he raced at numerous drag strips along the east coast. Dee's all-time special places were living on the farm and the Outer Banks, NC; where he would drive out on the beach, grill out, have a few cold ones, and spend quality time with family and friends. Some may have known Dee as a "ruff-n-tuff" guy; however, when you got to really know him, he had a heart of gold. Dee would give the shirt off his back and did so by helping numerous family members and friends. A truly unique, one a kind guy, who will be missed by many. Dee put forth a strong fight for several years and may now rest in peace! In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Massey Cancer Center at VCU Richmond, VA. Arrangements will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home - Dinwiddie Chapel. We welcome family and friends to pay their condolences from 1pm-2pm, with a celebration of life service at 2pm, and light refreshments to follow.
