David Adel Ameen

March 10, 1928 — January 30, 2024

David Adel Ameen, Professor Emeritus and Former Chairman of the Information Systems Dept. at VCU, made his exodus from life on January 30, 2024, to be with his eternal Father in Heaven.

David, a native and lifelong resident of Hopewell, was the son of the late Ahmed and Watfy Saiad Ameen. David is survived by this wife of seventy-three years, Clara Bury Ameen; his two sons, David (Betsy) and Richard; and his daughter, Cindy Welch; and by his nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane (Andy) Newbern Hunt; by his brothers, Saiad (Roma), Fred (Wauded), Jameil (Julia), and Lane (May); and by his sisters, Evelyn (Michael) Billy, Idell (Sterling) Ingram, and Josephine (Lynn) Brashear.

A graduate of Hopewell High School, David attended VMI for one year before receiving his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years. He resigned his commission in 1958, and was employed for sixteen years with the U.S. Army Logistics Management College, Fort Lee, VA. In 1959, he was responsible for installing and managing the first computer system used at the college. He earned his PhD in Mathematical Economics from the University of Maryland in 1974. Soon after, he took a position in Information Systems at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business, where he taught for twenty years.

He was very active in his community and served on several state and local boards, his last being a member of the Hopewell School Board.

He was a very dedicated father and husband, and was spiritually active in service to the Lord at St. John's Episcopal Church, for over sixty years, and more recently at West Hopewell Presbyterian Church, for over seventeen years. He shepherded a weekly Bible study that lasted over thirty years, and was still going strong near the end of his life. He also spent over fifty years leading a tennis cronies outfit who played doubles, mostly playing on the grass tennis court that he built and tended, and continued playing into his early nineties.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 9, 2024, from 6 pm until 8 pm, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, beginning at 11 am, at West Hopewell Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Ethan Mullis officiating. Following the funeral service, internment will occur at Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, VA. After internment, the family invites all who wish to attend to a reception at the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers a love offering be given to West Hopewell Presbyterian Church.
