David William South, 84, of Hopewell, VA, passed away on July 2, 2022, at John Randolph Medical Center, after battling stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer for over a year, and most recently pneumonia.
David was born in Dante, VA, to James L. South and Bertha Mae Cassell, on December 22, 1937. He moved to Hopewell at a young age. At the age of 15, he began his lifelong passion of working on cars (and anything else with an engine) at City Point Service Station with Joe Cerny, where he continued to work until he retired just a few years ago. If you didn't know his name, you knew him by "the little man that always had a cigar in his mouth". He married his first wife, Zelma, at the age of 19 in 1955 and they were together for 49 years before she passed in 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; daughters, Patty S. Ivancik (John), Betsy L. Hatcher (Mark); and son, Matthew W. South (Megan); sisters, Jean Caudill and Kitty Neely; a special lifelong friend who has always been there when we needed him, Jack Stanley; grandchildren, Adam Muncy, Jennifer Bottoms, David Muncy, Kayla Muncy, Amber Hatcher, Christopher Hatcher, Gabrielle Ramsey-Wilson, Alyssa Stovall, Courtney South, Matthew South, Jr., Brayden South, Makayla South, Maddie Toenniges, Mason South, and Mckinley South; great-grandchildren, Harrison Hatch, Wrigley Hatch, Makensie Muncy, Carter Muncy, Maverick Muncy, Paxton Muncy, Kimberly Muncy, Ryleigh-Ann Magoon, Jordan Magoon, Kaylee Bottoms, and Lani Ramsey-Wilson; and Preston Hatcher on the way; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, David was preceded in death by his first wife, Zelma South; son, Jonathan South; and siblings, Kathleen, Virginia, Hazel, Billie, Betty, Jim, Pat, Mary Anne, Jack, Caroline; and twin brother, Donald.
He was a long-time member of Calvary's Love Ministries. In his free time when he was younger, he always enjoyed fishing, listening to Nascar on the radio on Sundays, and playing a game of Hide and Seek with the neighborhood kids on Saturday nights. He was always available to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it, day or night. He enjoyed going to the lake on weekends and listening to old time bluegrass music.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, 2022 at the Calvary's Love Ministries, at 118 S 11th Ave, Hopewell, VA. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2022 at the Calvary's Love Ministries. Interment will follow in Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens.
