Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Dayton Dwayne Garrett, "DD", passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 11, 2024, at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anne Jones Garrett; a son, Stephen A. Garrett and spouse, Janet; granddaughter, Alexandra Garrett and partner, William Underwood; three great-grandchildren, Annabella Underwood, Xander Underwood, and Melody Underwood; two brothers, William Delbert Garrett and Danny Parker; three sisters, Lorraine Harris, Marie Kulp, and Janet Smith; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
DD is predeceased by his father, William Edward Garrett; mother, Minnie Harris Garrett; brothers, Edward Delane Garrett and Earl Michael Parker; sisters, Delma Louise Garrett and Nancy Lee Banks; his son, Dayton Dwayne Garrett, Jr.; and his grandson, William Samuel Paul Garrett.
Born October 10, 1942, in Gilmore County, West Virginia, to William and Minnie, DD was the second of ten children. He was raised in Letter Gap, West Virginia, until his teenage years, and then after a family move to Ohio, DD joined the military in 1959, serving in the Military Police, stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia. Following his discharge from the military, he joined the Henrico County Police Department, and later the Virginia State Police.
While still in the service DD met Anne Jones, they married and lived in Tidewater during his early years with the Virginia State Police. DD worked on the road initially, became a K9 handler for many years, and was eventually transferred to the BCI division. He was promoted to a Senior Special Agent and was greatly involved in the creation of the Virginia State Police Association and the Heat Program. He had a long and decorated career in the VSP, involved in numerous successful undercover operations leading to successful prosecutions. He retired in 1996, the special liaison to DMV and the VSP Auto Theft unit.
In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Samuel, and later supporting him in his fight with cancer. In recent years, he and Anne enjoyed their family and home, friends and community, volunteering with the Ford Volunteer Fire Department Auxillary, and providing the best BBQ in the county for community functions and a few lucky friends.
