Debbie Lewis Bain

Debbie Lewis Bain passed quietly on Monday, January 18, 2016, surrounded by family and friends. Born October 6, 1950 in Sussex County, she was the Valedictorian of the Class of 1969 at Stony Creek High School. She went on to William and Mary where she was a sister of Kappa Kappa Gamma and studied social studies and education. She was a beloved teacher and guidance counselor at Dinwiddie County High School for most of her 37 year career until her retirement in 2010. Over the years she helped countless students thrive in their high school experiences and go on to higher education. In the latter part of her career she was fondly known as the Testing Queen and had the crown to prove it. Over the years there have been many children that she did not give birth to who still fondly called her Mama Bain. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Irene Lewis, and is survived by her husband, Johnny, her children, Erin and Andrew (Chris), her brother, Wilbur Thornton Lewis, Jr., and sister-in-law, Bonnie Sue Thompson (Dennis). She also leaves behind several sisters, who were her dearest friends for life even though they were not related by blood. Debbie's capacity for love, compassion, and encouragement knew no bounds. She loved going to concerts and plays and was especially fond of annual beach vacations with friends and family. Debbie was a force to be reckoned with and a truly amazing soul. She was deeply loved by all who knew her, and though we are saddened by her passing, we know that her spirit will live on. A Celebration of Debbie’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, January 21, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 103 S. Adams St, Petersburg. The family will receive friends following the service until 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Debbie Bain Scholarship Fund at The Bank of McKenney.
