Dennie Gilbert Mitchem

Dennie G. Mitchem, 81, of Carson, formerly of Hopewell, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Dennie was born on March 17, 1942, in Rhodefield, WV, to Gilbert and Welda Mitchem. The oldest of four children, he was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 58 years, Nadine Wolfe Mitchem; and sisters, Polly Dodson and Evie Ent. He is survived by his two adoring children, daughter, Crystal Jeffreys and husband, Robert; son, Robert Mitchem and wife, Bridget; grandchildren, Sarah Jeffreys, Bobby Jeffreys and wife, Samantha, Mahala Mitchem, Keri Mitchem, and Alexandra Mitchem; great-grandchildren, Liam and Ethan Berry and Aerial Johnson; and brother, Don Mitchem. Dennie served his country in the United States Navy before working briefly for Allied Chemical, retiring after a 30 year career with American Tobacco Co. He was a member of Enon Church of God, where he helped build the current church building and enjoyed serving in the Boys Ministry, cooking breakfast for the seniors, and helping with maintenance projects. Dennie was a 48 year member and past President, Treasurer, and Lieutenant Governor of the Hopewell Optimist Club. He particularly enjoyed working the Christmas Tree Lot and taking pictures for the Optimist Events. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., the next day on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at the same location. Interment in Bermuda Memorial Park will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Hopewell Optimist Club. The family would also like to thank Crater Community Hospice, especially Rob and Tracee.
