Dennis Calvin Evans

Dennis Calvin Evans, 93, of Spring Grove, VA, died Tuesday, November 27, 2018. Born in Norfolk, VA, he was the son the late George W. and Nan Etheridge Evans. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Nancy George Evans; daughter, Janet; sons, Dennis, Jr. and Stuart, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and his former wife, Virginia Evans. Mr. Evans served in the U.S. Navy for 42 years of active and reserve duty. He served as a dive bomber during WWII and was a Squadron Leader during the Korean War. Following his active duty service, he attended seminary and became a licensed minister. He served several churches over the years in Washington D.C., Richmond, and Virginia Beach. He eventually settled in Surry County, VA, where he established SkyAnchor, a camp committed to promoting disability awareness. Throughout his life, he was active in the Boy Scouts and hosted many scouting events at SkyAnchor. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the Surry Ruritan Club, and served his community in many ways. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond, VA. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Salem United Methodist Church, Spring Grove, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SkyAnchor, P.O.
