Dennis Keith Myers

The Reverend Dr. Dennis Keith Myers, 66, of Petersburg, VA, passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2017, following a lengthy battle with heart disease and cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Mathias Myers and Evelyn Hodgekiss Myers of Petersburg, and a brother, Jerry Mathias Myers of Tucson, AZ.
Dr. Myers was born in Hopewell, VA, on January 21, 1951, and moved to Petersburg when he was six years old. He grew up in Petersburg and graduated from Petersburg High School in 1969. He entered Richard Bland College and then enlisted in the United States Army where he served for three years, including service in Vietnam from 1972-73. Dr. Myers also served in the Virginia Army National Guard for ten years and served as a recruiter for the Guard.
Dr. Myers married Constance A. Harrell on April 5, 1975. They were married for almost 42 years. Dr. Myers grew up in Second Baptist Church in Petersburg and was presently a member of Oakland Baptist Church in Prince George, VA. He was active in the Petersburg Baptist Association where he served as a former Moderator and on several committees over the past 37 years. He was instrumental in the development and building of Camp Kehukee of the Petersburg Baptist Association. He also served for 12 years as the Coordinator if Missions for the Southside Baptist Association, serving 23 churches who work together in missions, evangelism, and Christian fellowship.
Dr. Myers was a member of the Petersburg Breakfast Rotary Club with 37 years of perfect attendance. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, Benefactor, and enjoyed the principles and values of Rotary International. He was a Past President of both the Petersburg Rotary Club and the Petersburg Breakfast Rotary Club. He was also a founding and charter member of the Petersburg Breakfast Rotary Club. He also served two terms on the Richard Bland College Foundation Board and was President of the Alumni Association during the school’s 25th anniversary in 1985-86.
Dr. Myers graduated from Richard Bland College with an Associate’s Degree in Business and Virginia State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Administrative Systems Management with a minor in Business Education. He also received a Master’s in Business Administration from Averett University, a Master’s of Art in Christian Ethics from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Doctor of Education Degree.
He is survived by his wife, Constance H. Myers, one brother, Dr. George Rodney Myers of Washington State, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Oakland Baptist Church with Reverend Robert Livesay officiating. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home.
