Dennis Wayne Smith

Sergeant Major Dennis Wayne Smith – E-9 (Retired), age 77, of North Dinwiddie, died on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 in Virginia Beach, VA after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Veronica Sue; three children, Curtis Smith of Plano, TX, Becky Smith of North Dinwiddie, VA, and Mark Smith (wife Teresa) of Colonial Heights, VA;. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Connor Smith (wife Andelika) of Plano, TX, Ashley Smith of Hopewell, VA, and Danielle Smith of Colonial Heights, VA. Sergeant Major Smith served with distinction in the US Army for 25 years, earning several medals and commendations. He was deployed to Vietnam in the 1960’s and worked around the globe during his military career, choosing to retire in the Fort Lee, VA area in 1984. He went on to work as a civil servant with the Department of Defense for 17 years. He grew up in Itmann, WV where he met the love of his life in high school, Veronica. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Beatrice Smith; brother, Roger Smith; and sister, Judy Smith Marsh. He was an avid L.A. Dodger Fan, enjoyed fishing, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M., Monday, October 23, 2017 at the Dinwiddie Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, 6616 Boydton Plank Road, N. Dinwiddie, VA 23803. The family will receive friends one hour prior from 3:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. He will be interred at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA at a later date. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
