Retired U.S. Army Colonel Derrill G. Coonfield, age 85, of Dinwiddie County, died Saturday, February 22, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by family. Derrill was born in Ochelata, OK, son to the late Merle and Winnie Coonfield. He was married to the late Vivian Coonfield for 42 years; and is survived by his two children, Scott Coonfield (son) and his wife, Hollie, and Kelly Gottlieb (daughter) and her husband, Justin. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Emma and Lizzie Gottlieb, and Steven and Lindsey Coonfield and their mother, Lori Bartlett-Coonfield.
A dedicated family man and proud patriot, he served his country for 23 years, with his wife, Vivian by his side. During his decorated military career, Derrill served 3 tours in Vietnam, 3 years at the Pentagon, and commanded the 2nd Quartermaster Battalion in Fort Lee, VA.
Beyond his distinguished military career, Derrill was a devoted husband to Vivian and loving father. Known for his quick wit, he could always bring a smile to those around him. Beneath the laughter was a man who put his family above all else. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and laughter.
A celebration of Derrill's life will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 2:00 pm, at Petersburg Chapel at J.T. Morriss & Son, followed by a graveside service on Monday, March 3, 2025, at 11:00 am, at Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Wounded Warriors Project in Derrill's name. Rest in peace Derrill, your duty is done, your legacy lives on and your love will forever surround us.
