Dolores Elrod Joyner

Dolores Elrod Joyner "Sookie," 86, of Virginia Beach, VA, formerly of Chester, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2025. She was born in Hopewell, the daughter of the late Jasper Pruitt Elrod and Emma Bishop Elrod. Sookie graduated from Hopewell High School and Petersburg General Hospital Nursing School. She worked for local physicians, retiring from First Colonial Family Practice in Virginia Beach. Sookie was predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Cortlandt Hunter Joyner; and her beloved sister, Barbara Jean Setchel; and brother-in-law, Reverend Eugene O. Setchel. She is survived by her daughter, Tamara Joyner Evans; and sons, William Priutt Joyner (Rachel) and Robert Hunter Joyner (Susan); grandchildren, Cortney Puster Arnold (John), Brandon Hunter Puster, Ryan Brawley Joyner, Chelsea Emma Joyner, Tamara Hope Cook (Ryan), Katelyn Malone Joyner, Seth Hunter Joyner, and Hunter Louis Joyner; her great-grandchildren, Shane Lilly, Connor Laliberte, Jaxon Laliberte, Wrigley Cook, Sullivan Cook, Cooper Cook, Charle Arnold, and Emmalynn Arnold.

Sookie was active in service organizations, Chester Junior Woman's Club and Woman's Club. She loved her family, sailing Chesapeake Bay, and Blue Crabs.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Chester, VA, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Rd, Suite 130 Glen Allen, VA 23060.
