Donez West Poindexter

Donez West Poindexter, 89, of Colonial Heights, VA, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 28, 2023, after 20 years of a valiant struggle with Parkinson's Disease. She was born August 15, 1933, in Franklin, North Carolina, to Faye and Walter West. She graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1955, and began her career in teaching. She married Lee Poindexter in 1956, and they moved to Virginia in 1960, where she continued her career for 35 years in Chesterfield and started a family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter & Faye West; a daughter, Kimberly Poindexter; and a grandson, Matthew Gwaltney. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Lee Poindexter; daughters, Karen Gwaltney and Kelly Amidon (Michael); granddaughter, Rhiannon Boone (Donte); great-granddaughter, Avanni Boone; and great-grandson, Amari Boone. When she was healthy, she enjoyed taking walks, shopping, meeting friends for lunch, going to Emerald Isle, playing with her grandchildren, and her Shihtzus, Ahso and Soso. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 2, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., at J.T. Morriss & Son - Chester Chapel. A funeral service will follow in the chapel at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation.
