Doris Helen Kummerlowe, of Dinwiddie Virginia, formerly of Richmond Virginia and Baltimore Maryland, died peacefully in her sleep on August 4, 2016. She was at home surrounded by love. Born October 12, 1925 in Baltimore, MD; She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. Gutmann and Velma J. (Snyder) Gutmann of Baltimore, MD; her husband of 57 years, Oscar W. Kummerlowe Jr.; and her son, Stephen J. Kummerlowe. Doris was raised and educated in Baltimore, MD; she was brought up to love the Lord and throughout her life her many kindnesses touched the hearts and lives of others. She had a lifelong love of music; her earliest memory was of singing “Silent Night” at church at the age of two. She studied music and voice at the Peabody Institute followed by a Bachelor’s of Education from Towson State University where she was ranked top female student. During that time Doris met and fell deeply in love with Oscar, a neighbor who was an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. They married on April 5, 1947 and together they raised seven children. Together with Oscar she taught her children that the best things in life truly are free; viewing fireworks from a grassy hill, crabbing on the Eastern Shore, Sunday rides exploring the sights and sounds of the Baltimore harbor, attending church picnics and family functions in the country. Throughout her life Doris was active in numerous church and civic organizations, most lately with Concord United Methodist Church in Sussex, VA. Survivors include her children, Oscar W. Kummerlowe III, (Angie) of Birmingham, AL, Judith Rotz (Greg), Ronald W. Kummerlowe, Daniel K. Kummerlowe (Cyndi) all of Baltimore, MD, Laurel Tharrington (Mark), Christine Tharrington (Dean) of Dinwiddie, VA; brother, John W. Gutmann (Mary Lou); and 15 beloved grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend our special thanks to her team of dedicated caregivers.
