Doris Johnston Vaughan, age 93, a resident of Midlothian, VA, and former resident of Petersburg, VA, died Friday, July 22, 2016. Born March 21, 1923 in Glasgow, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late James and Edith Mair Johnston. She was also preceded in death by her only sibling, her younger sister, Sheila, who died in 1983. Doris was an educator for 38 years, and prior to her retirement in 1983, taught at Glasgow Academy for 25 years. She served as Commissioner of Girl Guides in Kilmacolm, Scotland and was active in the Presbyterian Women, both in Scotland and the U.S. Following her retirement, she married the late Dr. Robert C. Vaughan, Jr., a minister in the Presbyterian Church, on March 1, 1984 and moved to Petersburg, VA. Per Doris, “Life began with her marriage to Bob and the following 28 years were the best of her life.” Bob died April 23, 2012. Doris was an avid golfer since the age of 10 and continued to play into her nineties. She is survived by her nephews, James Gordon Fyfe (Ann), Graham Johnston Fyfe (Fiona), and David Campbell Fyfe (Margo) as well as several beloved great-nieces and great-nephews all of whom reside in Scotland; her step-children, Robert C. Vaughan, III (Ellen) of Charlottesville, VA, Susan Vaughan Henry (Marshall) of Chester, VA, and Hugh Schuyler Vaughan (Carolyn) of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, James Marshall Henry, IV (Emily), Anne Henry Mann (Kelly), Hailey Vaughan Robertson (Rob), Elizabeth Vaughan Coonse (Jeffrey), Robert C. Vaughan, IV, Anne Marie Vaughan-Meer (Lisa), and Christine Vaughan Maloney (Mike); great-grandchildren, Bo, Lauren, Darcy, Bridget, Holden, Schuyler, Dylan, Lliam, Carson, and Skylar. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2016 at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 7500 Hull Street Road, N. Chesterfield, VA 23235.
