Doris E. Whiting, 97, passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. She was a native of New Brunswick, Canada and the daughter of the late Howard and Blanche Gunter McLaughlin. She was the widow of Richard A. Whiting , her husband of 75 years, who passed away in January 2011 at the age of 100. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, David Todd Whiting; sisters, Ethel Tracey and Blanche Gay; and brothers, Harold, Ralph and Wendell McLaughlin. She is survived by two sons, Robert Whiting (Anita) of Sutherland, VA and David Whiting (JoAnne) of Colonial Heights, VA; a daughter, Nancy Crawford (Robert) of Stafford, VA; six grandchildren, Shayne Whiting, Walter Whitt, Richard Whitt, Jason Whitt, Shawn Showalter (William), and Joel Whiting; six great-grandchildren, Caleb and Seth Showalter, Lohgan, Anton, Peyton and Kahlan Whitt; a sister, Jean Kitchen (Reginald), and a brother-in-law, John Gay; and many nieces and nephews. She graduated from Provincial Normal School (Teacher's School) in Fredericton, New Brunswick and taught in a one-room schoolhouse. Later she worked as a laboratory technician at Lederle Laboratories in New Jersey and at Allied Chemical (Honeywell) in Hopewell, VA. She was a faithful member of Ettrick United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She loved traveling, playing bridge, cooking for the monthly neighborhood suppers, and preparing holiday meals for her family. She loved Virginia but she honored her mother's request that she not give up her Canadian citizenship. After she and Richard retired, they enjoyed many summers in Canada with her brothers and sisters. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Memorial Service. The Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Blankenship officiating.
