Dorothy "Dot" Katherine Ahern

April 4, 1923 — December 30, 2017

Dorothy “Dot” Katherine Ahern, 94, passed away at home on December 30, 2017 in Prince George, VA. Born April 4, 1923 in Hartford, CT, Dot had been a long-time resident of Natick, MA. She was the daughter of Joseph and Jennie Bennett of West Hartford. Her family and friends will remember her as a strong woman with a wry sense of humor with a twinkle in her eye. Dot Graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing in 1945 in Hartford. After graduating, she enlisted in the US Army Nurse Corps and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant. V-J Day occurred while Dot was en route to the Philippines aboard a hospital ship. In North Luzon, she served as a surgical nurse with the 247th Medical Detachment at Clark Field. After the war she worked at the Cushing General military hospital in Framingham, MA, which treated wounded veterans. There, she met her husband of 62 years, Charles M. Ahern, who also worked at Cushing. While living in Natick and raising three children, Dot worked as an OR and ER nurse at Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick and as a school nurse for the Natick School System. She volunteered at Leonard Morse hospital for many years until she moved to Virginia. Dot enjoyed craft projects including quilting and knitting and cheering on the Boston Red Sox Reading was a special pleasure, especially a good mystery. She is survived by two daughters: Ellen Buchanan and her husband John of Prince George, VA and LTC (retired) Margaret Mills, of Sierra Vista, AZ; and her son, Charles Ahern and his wife Suzon, of Des Moines, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Douglas Buchanan, Julia (Mills) Crockett, Kelly Mills, and Patrick Ahern. A Rosary Service will be held on January 4, 2018 at 6:00pm with a visitation to follow until 8:00pm at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home Petersburg, with private burial soon after at Mount St Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield, CT. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Dot’s honor be made to Prince George Fire, EMS and Emergency Management 6602 Courts Drive, 2nd floor, PO Box 68 Prince George VA 23875.
