Dorothy Butler, 85, of DeWitt VA, went to be with the Lord on May 8, 2014. Known to many as Nana, she passed away peacefully, doing what she loved, working in her flower garden. She was born on December 7, 1928 to Marcus and Atha Joyner in Windsor, North Carolina. She loved to tell stories about her childhood growing up on the farm, one of six children. It was life on the farm that taught her the magic of making things grow. She truly had a wonderful gift in the garden. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Milton Butler. They were married for nearly 50 years and Nana loved to reminisce about how much they loved one another and how she couldn’t wait to join him in heaven. She is survived by two loving and devoted daughters, Judy Thompson (late son-in-law Maynard Thompson) of DeWitt and Kathy Froehlich (Bobby Froehlich) of Chesterfield. She was a proud grandmother to four grandchildren, Stephanie Harris (Walter Harris) of Dinwiddie, Kevin Ruiz (Tammy Ruiz) of Prince George, Chris Thompson (Rae Thompson) of Petersburg, and Tony Thompson (Ela Thompson) of Dinwiddie. She also had 5 great granddaughters and five great grandsons. She was especially proud that she was blessed with a great, great granddaughter and bragged about it often. Nana also had a large extended family with numerous nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. She was a member of First Christian Church in Hopewell, VA for many years. She loved her church and spoke about it often. Nana was well known in her community and loved by many. She loved to socialize and visit with family and friends and was definitely blessed with the gift of gab. Her memorial service will be held at First Christian Church in Hopewell, VA on Wednesday May 14, 2014 at 10am. Grave side services will follow at Southlawn Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to First Christian Church, 203 North 11th Avenue Hopewell, VA. (P.O. Box 1232 Hopewell, VA), in memory of Dorothy Butler.
