Dorothy W. Barney Butterworth, 87, of Petersburg, widow of Hamilton D. Butterworth, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family, Wednesday, May 13, 2009 after a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Virginia Belle Johnson. She was the first woman in Virginia to break the All Boys Club Superintendent of Schools List and author of the first Standards of Quality For Education in Virginia. Mrs. Butterworth is survived by her sons, Willis Robinson Worth and David Johnson McDuff Barney; grandchildren, Elizabeth R. Dalton, Philip Hamilton Worth. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 18, 2009 at the Petersburg Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at Christ & Grace Episcopal Church with The Rev. David H. Teschner, Rector, officiating.
