Dorothy White Grubbs, 93, went to be with her Lord on Friday, November 2, 2007. She was born in Isle of Wight County and spent most of her life in Surry County. Dorothy was the widow of Clarence Benjamin Grubbs who died June 2, 1960. Born July 24, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Lizzie Berryman White and Samuel Watson White, Sr. After working the first 20 years of her adult life with her husband on the farm, Mrs. Grubbs started working in the public sector in 1955 and continued until December 2006 when she retired at 92 years old. She worked as a tour guide at the Jamestown Festival Park, Smithâ??s Fort Plantation, and Baconâ??s Castle. The last 23 years of her working career she was the Assistant Librarian for the Surry Public Library in the Town of Surry.
Mrs. Grubbs was known and loved by many as â??Grandma Dossieâ?. She was a member of Mooreâ??s Swamp Baptist Church, the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, United Daughters of the Confederacy, The Dendron Historical Society, and the Surry County Historical Society and Museum.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara G. Simmerman and her husband, James, of Windsor, VA; Carol G. Andrews and her husband, Richard, of Wakefield, VA; a son, David Michael Grubbs of Elberon, VA; twelve grandchildren, Suzanne S. Rogers and her husband, Kenny, Beverly Alvin Seward, III, Robin S. Gynn and her husband, Harold, Martha S. Newsome and her husband, Clarence, Dorothy S. Murray and her husband, Dan, Linda S. Tuck and her husband, Mike, Elizabeth S. Leonard, Anthony Seward and his wife, Lisa, Margaret A. Piacentini and her husband, Gary, James R. (Rick) Andrews and his wife, Beth, W. Ronald Andrews and his wife, Elizabeth, J. Russell Andrews and his wife, Julie; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Mooreâ??s Swamp Baptist Church, Elberon, VA. on Monday, November 5, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Danny R. Blalock officiating. Interment will follow in Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Ivor, VA. The family will receive friends Sunday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Purviance Chapel of J. T.
