Dorothy Jewel Ihnken

October 6, 1919 — August 6, 2018

Dorothy J. Ihnken died on August 6, 2018. Born October 6, 1919 in Astoria, Long Island, she was the daughter of the Erna J. Belcher and Edward A. Ihnken. She lived in New York and New Jersey until the family moved to Colonial Heights, VA in 1961. A 1944 graduate of Westhampton College, University of Richmond, she studied violin and art, and was happiest when playing or listening to the music she loved and creating original decorations and displays. She leaves behind numerous cousins: Lucy R., William B. (Martha), and John Correll; Susan Smith (Bill), Nancy Small (Bryan), Collette Lisenby, and Renée Winter (Michael). Other family members include Ernest Ihnken, III (Klaras), Steve Rison (Galina), and Gene Andrews (Linda). Dorothy valued her close relationships with many good friends and neighbors. She cherished, in particular, the kindness and friendship of Peggy and Michael Courtright, Helen Patrick, Lisa and Larry Newman, and Karon and Bob Streets. Dot would also want to recognize her special relationship with Diana Casals and her family. During a visit to Honduras in 1958, Dorothy experienced their remarkable hospitality. Known to them fondly as “Tia Dot,” she enjoyed a close relationship with three generations of Diana’s family. A graveside funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 10, at Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
