Dorothy Smrek Kohout

May 29, 1924 — April 11, 2023

Dorothy Ann Smrek Kohout was born May 29, 1924, in Portage, Pennsylvania.

She was the third child of the late August and Mary Kuska Smrek. She left home at 16 and ventured south to Baltimore for two years. At 18, she moved to Virginia to live and work with relatives and meet her future husband - Frank Kohout.

After working many jobs as a housekeeper, Airplane Riveter during WWII, family farm cook, Seward Luggage, Titmus Optical, in the school cafeteria, cleaning newly built houses, she found her passion for cake making at the age of 53. She was also known as "Mama Dot" to numerous children in her care throughout the years.

She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis and husband, Richard Perdue, of Petersburg; daughter, Donna and husband, Thomas Wayne Kirkland, of Dinwiddie; grandchildren, Michael Perdue of Atlanta, GA, Michelle Perdue Hayden and husband, Karl, of Smiths Station, AL, Brian Jennings and wife, Sara, of Beaverdam, VA; great-grandchildren, Brayden and Blake Jennings; sisters-in-law, Peggy Kohout and Elizabeth Smrek; many loving and devoted nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and their families.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Frank; grandson, Ronald Allen Perdue; sisters, Margaret Stech, Marie Rapski, and Alice Duda; brothers, John, Andrew, George, and Albert; sisters-in-law, Vie, Marie, Rachael, Josephine Ballard, and Mary Kossick; brothers-in-law, James Stech, Walter Rapski, Ed Duda, Wilson Ballard, Waverly Kossick, and James Kohout; nephews, Albert Smrek, Jr. and Andrew Smrek, Jr.; and niece, Maryann Muro.

She was the oldest active member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church. Other than making cakes for over 20 years, she had a passion for bingo, canning, gardening, and watching game shows.

A wonderful person who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 16, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2023 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church with Father. Julz Buena officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
