Dr. Erline Perkins McGriff 80, formerly of Petersburg, died Monday December 27, 2004 in New York City. Dr. McGriff was born in Petersburg, Virginia, attended Petersburg High School and then entered the nursing profession at Sibley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, DC. She completed the BSNE and MSNE at Catholic University of America followed by obtaining the Doctor of Education Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. She was a nurse, but she was better known as Dr. McGriff. She was a Professor of Nursing in the Division of Nursing, School of Education, New York University for over thirty years. This educator has taught several thousand nursing students during her career. She has received many honors for her outstanding contributions to the nursing profession. Two scholarships have been named for her. Although she lived in New York for many years, she said that she was always proud to tell people that she was a Virginian transplanted to New York. She was married for 32 years to her husband, Vern H. McGriff, who was a Professor of Special Education. She is survived by her nieces and nephews. There will be a graveside service held February 2, 2005 at 1:00 PM, in Blandford Cemetery.
