Herbert Tobias, 95, died Friday, April 10, 2009. The son of Max and Katie Tobias, Herbert was predeceased by his wives Edith Ostroff Tobias and Sylvia Barkan Tobias, his sister Mollie Zatcoff, and his brother A. Louis Tobias.
He is survived by his son, Carl William Tobias, and wife, Margaret Sanner; daughter, Gail Tobias Stafford, and husband, Michael; grandson, Jonathan Edward Stafford, and wife Maria; and great-grandson, Benjamin Wesley Stafford. He is also survived by a stepson, Michael Barkan, and wife, Sandy, and their four children and families.
Dr. Tobias practiced dentistry in Petersburg, Virginia, for more than 40 years. A veteran of World War II, he achieved the rank of captain in the U.S. Army while serving throughout South America. While living in Petersburg, he was an active member of Temple Brith Achim. When his children were young, the family enjoyed leisure time at a cottage on the James River and those days hold special memories for him. Herbert was an avid fisherman, golfer and bridge player. Herbert Tobias was a life-long learner. He modeled his love of learning throughout his life. He was one of the first adults of his age to learn about computers and he took numerous classes on all types of subjects at local community colleges into his early nineties.
The family is being served by the Petersburg Chapel of J.T.Morriss & Son Funeral Home . There will be a graveside service at Brith Achim Cemetery, 319 S. Crater Road , Petersburg, at 2 pm Sunday, April 12.
