Dwayne Hall “Big Joe” Abernathy, 68, of Dinwiddie County passed away at home Sunday, June 8, 2014. Following graduation from Hargrave Military Academy, Dwayne served as a US Marine in Vietnam where he received 3 purple hearts. He was a member of the Horseshoe Hunt Club in the Old Hickory Community and an avid gardener and sportsman. He was a contractor and served as Building Inspector for Dinwiddie County for 27 years before retiring. He was preceded in death by his parents James Rideout Abernathy and Annie Hall Abernathy Barnes. Dwayne is survived by his son, Joel Dennis Abernathy of Dinwiddie, a brother James Donnan Abernathy and wife Marian; sister, Carol Abernathy Barnes and husband Francis, all of Dinwiddie County; niece, Tracy Barnes Nicholson and husband James of Capron; nephews, James Broaddus Barnes (Jim) of Dinwiddie County and Michael Chad Hall and wife Tina of Chesterfield and loving friend Emily Jones of Eastville. The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Concord United Methodist Church, 18591 Concord Sappony Road, Stony Creek, Va. Graveside services will be Friday, June 13, at 3pm at Blandford Cemetery, 319 S. Crater Rd, Petersburg, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dinwiddie Volunteer Rescue Squad, 10027 Boydton Plank Road, Dinwiddie, VA 23841 or the Old Hickory Volunteer Fire Department, 25813 Courthouse Road, Stony Creek, VA 23882.
