Earl I. Childress of Chester, VA, affectionately known as Gampy or Grandpa, passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2023. Born October 13, 1936, in Chesterfield County, he was a U.S. Army Veteran and the youngest son of the late James and Carrie Childress. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Arlene, and his many siblings. He is survived by his daughters Robin Vitale (Salvo); Sherri Graydon; Jodie Frye, and her children Madyson and Haydon; and son Ron Whitmore (Susan), and his daughters, Hannah and Brooke; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Earl moved from Chesterfield to Buckroe Beach as a child, where he spent a good part of his younger years. He always spoke fondly of the memories of his childhood at the beach and would visit the area whenever he could to reminisce. He moved back to Chesterfield in the late 1940s, permanently residing in Chester, VA. He is remembered as being patient, kind, generous, and one of the most genuine people one could ever meet. He was a carpenter from the age of 14 and retired as a supervisor from Tomac Corporation in the early 2000s. After his retirement, he spent most of his time catching up on the latest television shows and movies, but mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family. Earl loved nothing more than a home-cooked meal, and a good family gathering. His smile evoked warmth in all who he encountered. He will be terribly missed.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at J.T. Morriss & Son-Chester, 3050 W. Hundred Road, Chester, VA 23831. Condolences may be registered at
