Earl William Kagels of Colonial Heights, passed away at his home Monday, May 24, 2004 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his devoted wife, Peggy L. Kagels; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas E. and Brenda B. Kagels; a daughter and son-in-law, Alice K. and Paxton S. Campbell; a step-daughter, Sharon Guernsey; and a step-son, Allan Green. He is also survived by his sister, Marion K. Stephenson of Lockport, N.Y.; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie S. and Peter P. Kagels, Sr. of Newfane, N.Y., four brothers, and two sisters. After serving in the U.S. Army 86th Engineer Battalion during WWII, he worked in the Savings Bond Division of the Department of the Treasury for nearly 20 years then transferred to the Defense General Supply Center at Bellwood until retiring in 1977. He then worked at J. T. Morriss & Son Funeral Homes and Autolease until his illness forced him to resign. He was a member of the American Legion Post 284, the Colonial Heights Moose Lodge 1781, a life-member of Disabled American Veterans, life-member of Fort Powhatan Hunt Club, and former member of the South Chesterfield Ruritan Club. Until his health declined, he was an active member of Wood’s United Methodist Church, serving as a member of the men’s choir, the Perkinson-Dyson Sunday School class, and the United Methodist Men. The American Legion Post 284 will conduct a memorial service at 7:00 pm Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:30 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday, May 27th at Wood’s United Methodist Church, 7200 Hickory Road, Chesterfield, VA., and burial to follow at Bermuda Memorial Park.
