Edith Halyama Starkey, 84, passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2010 in Windsor VA.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan S. Joyner and husband David of Ivor; two sons, David E. Starkey of Ivor and Andrew F. Starkey of Roanoke; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank C. Starkey.
Mrs. Starkey was a resident of the Roanoke VA area until she moved to the Tidewater VA area in the mid- 1990â??s. She had served as Superintendent of Child Enforcement Services for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Roanoke District from 1972 until she retired in 1990. Prior to that, she served a superintendent of Social Services for Salem VA. She was also a former teacher at Roanoke Business College and as a young woman was the first woman reporter for the Clarksburg WVA newspaper.
A graveside funeral service will be held in the mausoleum chapel of Old Dominion Memorial Gardens on Cloverdale Road in Roanoke at 1:00 PM Tuesday Feb. 16, 2010. The Purviance Chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son Wakefield VA is handling arrangements. Condolences may be posted at www.jtmorriss.com
