Edward Paul Moncol

March 7, 1925 — March 24, 2017

Edward Paul Moncol, 92, longtime resident of Surry, died peacefully at home in Richmond on March 24, 2017, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on March 7, 1925, to Andraj “Andrew” and Zsuzsi “Susie” Moncol in Prince George, VA, and was proud of his first-generation status in the Slovak community there. During World War II, he managed the family farm and served in the Virginia Reserve Militia. From 1953 to 1986, he held various roles with VEPCO and then Dominion Power, from which he retired as local supervisor for Surry County. Paul was a faithful member of Surry United Methodist Church and the Surry Ruritan Club. His passions included teaching the art of making Brunswick stew over an open fire, maintaining a vegetable garden large enough to share produce with his family and friends, making beautiful furniture and other items, all made from his choice of lumber – walnut, slaying fish on the Outer Banks piers, and singing the old familiar hymns with anyone, anywhere at any time. He is predeceased by his parents; a brother, Andrew W. Moncol; and sisters, Emily M. Mistr, Christine M. Belsches and Helen M. Tankersley. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Virginia M. Moncol; daughters, Elizabeth M. Stowe (Wilford) and Paulette L. Moncol (Melodie); grandchildren, Bradley E. Kolesar (Jenna) and Laura K. Garrett (Daniel); great grandchildren, Michael Garrett and Avery Kolesar; and a brother, Dr. Daniel J. Moncol; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 27, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., in the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss and Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted in the Chapel on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Burial will follow at Merchant’s Hope Memorial Gardens in Prince George. The family thanks Drs. Karl Koenig, Barry Wein and Timothy Wilson for their committed medical attention, the dedicated and friendly transport provided by Amelia Ambulance, and the loving care provided by Tempest Lofton, Laura Garrett, Juanita Merrick, Lorraine Semidey, Candace Haley, Brittany Kersey and Darren Gregory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Surry United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 118, Surry, VA 23883, to the National Kidney Foundation, or to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
