Elinor Sue Burney of Disputanta, died Tuesday, November 20, 2007 in Johnston-Willis Hospital. She was born in Hopewell, Virginia; the daughter of the late Neill Jefferson Burney, Sr. and the late Martha Rosa Wyche Burney. Miss Burney was predeceased by two brothers, Neill Jefferson Burney, Jr. and Thomas Andrew Burney. She is survived by a brother, Hal Wyche Burney (Rosemarie) of Taylor, TX, two sisters, Alvah Jean Burney Wagner of Bristol, VA. and Nancy Burney McCants (Aubrey) and numerous nieces and nephews. She graduated from Hopewell High School, Montreat College in Montreat, N.C. and received a Masters of Education Degree in Guidance from University of Virginia. Sue was an Educator and Counselor for over 30 years teaching in Hopewell and Prince George and at Montreat College, was a counselor at Mallonee Middle School and St. Leo College at Ft. Lee, served in the Army Library Service at Ft. Lee and Camp Pickett and on Okinawa, was a member of numerous local, state and national clubs and organizations. Among the many awards and honors received are the Hopewell VFW 1966 Outstanding Teachers Award and the 2006 Alumni Service Award from Montreat College. Memorial Service will be held in the Hopewell Chapel of J. T. Morriss Funeral Home and Cremation Service on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be private. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4240 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, Va. 23060. The Heritage Society Scholarship Fund, Montreat College, Box 1267, Montreat, N. C. 28757 or an organization of choice. Condolences may be registered with www.jtmorriss.com .
