Elinor Bloom Marshall, 74, of Midlothian, and former long-time resident of Petersburg, passed away Friday, December 17, 2010 at VCU Medical Center after a brief and courageous battle with cancer.
Throughout her life, Elinor had a remarkable talent for connecting with people of all ages, and seeing their unique qualities. Scores of people were touched by her caring spirit and described her as a mother to them. Her greatest joy in life was in giving to others, a value she said was instilled in her by her father, and a purpose she regarded as central to Judaism.
To her family, friends and innumerable fellow volunteers, Elinor was the one who brought fun and vivaciousness to every endeavor. She was whole-hearted in everything she pursued, and famously meticulous. Elinorâ??s taste and insistence on quality was apparent every day of her life in her elegant appearance and demeanor. Among her family and out in the world, she was always the epitome of a lady.
She was devoted to Congregation Brith Achim in Petersburg, where she provided discerning leadership for over 40 years. Serving on its Board of Directors for decades, she was the first woman to serve as President. She was the Templeâ??s choir director for decades, the organizer of many successful special music programs and was chosen as â??Outstanding Memberâ?. In 2009, Elinor was the recipient of the Sophie Stahl Award for Lifetime Achievement, given by the Richmond Chapter of Jewish Women International. She was the immediate Past President of the Richmond Chapter of Hadassah.
A tireless community volunteer, Elinor most recently served on the Advisory Board of Massey Cancer Center of the Medical College of Virginia, and the Foundation Board of Richard Bland College of the College of William and Mary. Over her lifetime, she was a member of the boards of Historic Petersburg Foundation, YMCA of Southside Virginia, Virginia Opera Association, United Way of Southside Virginia, Virginia State Lung Association, Petersburg Chapter of the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross of Southside Virginia, Petersburg Architectural Review Board, Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Fort Lee Army Advisory Committee among others. She served as Chairman of Downtown Petersburg, Inc., Southside Region Chair of Appomattox Educational Foundation (Governorâ??s School) and was appointed by Governor Baliles to the Commission to Study Preservation.
A distinguished and accomplished businesswoman, Elinor was President of The Oak, Inc. retail furniture company and Founder of Elinor Marshall, LTD, a retail fine ladies apparel company. She served on the boards of the Southern Home Furnishings Association, Community Bancshares and Commerce Bank of Virginia (now Wells Fargo). In 1986 she was named Boss of the Year by the Five Forks chapter of American Business Womenâ??s Association.
As an arts patron and sought-after vocal soloist, she served on the Womenâ??s Committee of the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and on the boards of Petersburg Ballet, Southside Virginia Community Concert Association and Virginia Opera Association. She was for many years a soloist at St. Paulâ??s Episcopal Church, Christ and Grace Episcopal Church and Trinity Methodist Church.
Elinor was born on August 13, 1936 in Petersburg, Virginia. She earned her bachelorâ??s degree in music from Womanâ??s College of the University of North Carolina, now UNC-Greensboro, and did graduate studies in music at Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Irvin Louis and Flora Lubman Dorsk and her first husband, Allan S. Bloom. She is survived by her husband, George Clinton Marshall; sons, Arthur Lane Bloom and wife, Mindy of Winston-Salem, NC, Stephen Mark Bloom of Midlothian, and Lawrence Jay Bloom and wife, Constance of Chesterfield; grandchildren, Austin Stewart Bloom, Cameron Laine Bloom, Alex Scott Bloom, Marshall Logan Bloom, Anna Morgan Bloom, Aaron Taylor Bloom, and Ryan Carter Bloom; step-children, George Marshall, Jr. and wife, Marie, Teresa Jones, and James Marshall and wife, Cindy; step-grandchildren, Holli Nienaber, Deborah Wallace, Heather Marshall, Robbi Jones, and Kristen Marshall.
A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 22nd at Congregation Brith Achim, 314 South Boulevard, Petersburg, with Rabbi Dennis Beck-Berman officiating. A private interment service for the immediate family will follow at Brith Achim Cemetery. After the funeral service, the family will receive friends at the Petersburg Country Club, 1250 Flank Road.
