Cora Elizabeth Barker (Bett) Cheatham, 96, died November 20, 2007 at East Pavilion in Franklin, VA, after a period of declining health. Born October 4, 1911 in Sussex County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Sidney Thomas Barker and Victoria Elizabeth Drewry Barker.
The deceased grew up in Wakefield, graduated from Wakefield High School, and was a lifelong member of Wakefield United Methodist Church. Her career was in the medical field, first in the office of Dr. E. C. Nettles and the office of Dr. W. R. McEwen, both in Wakefield, and then as a laboratory technician at Camp Pickett and the U. S. Army Hospital at Fort Lee from which she retired.
For most of her adult life she resided in Petersburg and Dinwiddie County, and then moved to the Village at Woods Edge several years ago. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Founders and Patriots, and The Jamestown Society.
She was the widow of Leon Preston Cheatham, Jr. and was predeceased by her sister, Eula Barker Rowe; three brothers, James Nicholas Barker, Sidney Thomas Barker, Jr., and Francis Drewry Barker; as well as two nieces, Virginia Lee Rowe and Ruth Rowe Kello; and a nephew, James N. Barker, Jr.
Mrs. Cheatham is survived by her sister-in-law, Katherine Whitehurst Barker of Chesapeake; four nieces, Bettie Rowe Hughes of Wilson, NC, Frances Jean Barker Tull and her husband, Richard, of Fruitland, MD, Katherine Barker Porterfield and her husband, Bob, of Chesapeake, and Carolyn Barker Gedris and her husband, Bill, of Layton, Utah, and a nephew, Charles B. (Jimmie) Rowe and his wife, Nancy, of Courtland; as well as by numerous great nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Wakefield United Methodist Church, Wakefield, VA, with the Rev. G. C. Branton, III officiating. Burial will follow in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Wakefield United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 87, Wakefield, VA 23888; or to a charity of your choice. The Purviance Chapel of J. T.
