Elizabeth Askew Major

February 13, 1922 — August 2, 2015

Elizabeth Askew Major, 93, of Dinwiddie County, widow of John Samuel Major, III, passed away Sunday, August 2, 2015. Born in Northampton County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Bessie Johnson Askew and was also predeceased by her five siblings. A 1943 graduate of the Petersburg School of Nursing, she enjoyed a long career as a Registered Nurse. She retired in 1997 after 42 years as a nurse in the office of Dr. Charles Ashby. Mrs. Major was a member of Crawford United Methodist Church, BOP (Beautiful Older People of Smyrna Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, VA), the Primetimers at Carson United Methodist Church, and the Retired Nurses Lunch Group. Her volunteer work included the Dinwiddie Christmas Sharing Program, Friends of the Dinwiddie Library, American Red Cross, and the Dinwiddie Food Bank. In 2009, she was named Dinwiddie Christmas Mother, which she considered a great honor. Mrs. Major is survived by her son, John Samuel “J.S.” Major, IV. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home with the Reverend Tom Lester officiating. Interment will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crawford UMC, P.O. Box 328, Dinwiddie, VA 23841. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
