Emmett Thomas Lowery

Emmett Thomas Lowery, 80, of Chester, VA passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at his home after a period of declining health. Born in Halifax County on October 7, 1936 he was the son of the late James Evie and Annie Cole Lowery; and was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Dixie Daniel Lowery; four sisters, Virginia, Nell, Thelma and Hilda; and seven brothers, Otis, Chester, Floyd, Paige, Gus, Weldon and Lindy. Emmett served in the United States Air Force from February 1, 1956 until January 31, 1960. After being discharged from the Air Force, Emmett spent his career in the United States Postal Service and retired as Postmaster of Hopewell, VA. Mr. Lowery is survived by his children, Sam Lowery and wife, Deanna, Elton Lowery and wife, Cathleen and Kathy Crone; one brother, Aubrey Lowery of Virgilina, VA; a grandson, Dustin Crone; and three step-grandchildren, Lauren Tormodsen, Kristen Kelly and Patrick Leavy; four step great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Chester Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service until 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome, or contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Lowery.
