Estelle Horne "Nanny" Wilkins, 92, of North Dinwiddie, passed away on December 1, 2022.
Born in Sampson County, NC and raised in Suffolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Wilson and Mary Horne. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Leamon Wilkins, Sr.; two sons, Timothy Wilkins and Jason Wilkins; and siblings Alvin, Caldwell, Albert, Ashley, Alton, Lizzie Salmon, Akra Adams, Betty Boyette, Alice Jones, and Sally Horne.
She is survived by her sons, Leamon "Bubba" Wilkins, Jr. (Carla Milot), Donald Wilkins, Troy Wilkins (Melissa); daughters Cathy Kidd, Sissy Bailey, and Tracy Harrison; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Estelle was employed with several small factories in the Petersburg area early in life. However, children were both her passion and her weakness, and so she began a lifelong career of babysitting and became a second mom and Nanny for every child she knew.
She loved Murder She Wrote and The Golden Girls marathons...her favorite was Sophia. She loved to read her Bible and loved to read the newspaper...to anyone who would listen. However, her favorite pastime was being the Kmart greeter with her partner in crime, Lorena Kirkland, as they spent hours there together having coffee.
A special thank you to Kindred Hospice caregivers, Karin Blankenship, Laura Daniels, Nikki Hobbs, and a special friend Pam Lauter.
She will be escorted to her final resting place by her grandchildren and great-grandchild: Kenneth Droddy, Jamie Kidd, Todd Wilkins, Jennifer Wilkins, McKensie Wilkins, Alex Wilkins, Dillon Wilkins, and Wayne Droddy.
A visitation will be held at 1 pm on Friday, December 9, 2022 at the J.T. Morriss & Son -Petersburg Chapel, with a funeral service to follow at 2 pm. Interment will follow immediately at Southlawn Memorial Park. Condolences can be registered online at
