Eugene Salisbury Kokinski

April 13, 1931 — September 16, 2016

Eugene Salisbury Kokinski, 85, passed peacefully in his home in Deltaville, VA, while overlooking his beloved river. Born in Hopewell, VA, on April 13, 1931, he was raised by his loving aunt and uncle, Sallie and Joe Diaz, who predeceased him. He was a graduate of Hopewell High School and later RPI. Gene served in the U.S. Navy. He was a self-made man who worked very hard in life to acquire knowledge that would help him advance in life and ultimately take care of his family whom he dearly loved. As a young boy Gene was very active in his church which led to his becoming an Eagle Scout. Later as an adult he became active in the Jaycees on the local, state, and national levels. He was awarded a lifetime membership to the Hopewell Moose Lodge, was chairman of the Hopewell Housing Authority, a member of the Hopewell Anglers and Saltwater Fishermen, and plant comptroller at ICI where he retired from after numerous years of service. Gene was also an avid supporter of the Washington Redskins. As a long-time season ticket holder, he and his friends enjoyed countless good times together. Finally, he loved to travel and whistle. Gene is surely whistling again as he rejoins his old buddies who went before him. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nadine Kokinski; daughters, Jeanine Gilmore and Sherri Bartlett (Lewis); two 4-legged kids, Mitzi and Cassie ("Pal"); grandson, Chris Gilmore; great grandson, Cameron Newsome; sister-in-law, Anne Grinnell, niece, Tonya Hoover; cousins, Anne Dodson Saunders and Alfred Dodson, Jr.; and two devoted caregivers, Peggy and Coach Traynham. Funeral arrangements will be private. The family is being served by the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association 4600 Cox Rd # 130, Glen Allen, VA 23060 or St. John's Episcopal Church 505 Cedar Ln, Hopewell, VA 23860. Condolences may be registered at www.jtmorriss.com .
