Eugene Russell Marable, Jr. died on September 11, 2023 at Westminster Canterbury in Richmond, Virginia at the age of 102. He was the son of the late Eugene Russell Marable, Sr. and Enola Simmons Marable. He was born in Prince George County on February 7, 1921 at "Blairs" the family farm on the James River. Soon thereafter the family moved to Petersburg, Virginia.
He attended public schools in Petersburg and earned both his undergraduate and law degrees at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. During this time he enlisted in the U.S. Army for 3 years in World War II. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Society and The Sigma Society. He was manager of the baseball team under Cy Twombly (the artist's father) and was twice head of Fancy Dress. Upon graduation in 1948, he was hired by the trust department of Wachovia Bank in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He later returned to Petersburg as a partner in the law firm of H. C. Kinsey Spotswood and then joined Bohannon, Kinsey and Marable, where he stayed until his retirement at age 93 in 2014. During his practice he was appointed Judge of the Municipal Court, Judge of the Petersburg General District Court, City Attorney for Petersburg, Attorney for the Petersburg School Board and Attorney for the Petersburg Redevelopment and Housing Authority. For many years he was Virginia counsel for the Continental Can Co. In an ironic turn of events, he was the attorney at the 1991 closing of Continental's multi-million dollar sale of "Blairs", of which his father had lost in The Great Depression. An avid golfer, he was a long time member of The Country Club of Petersburg, The Princess Anne Country Club and Farmington Country Club. He was a member of Christ and Grace Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry.
He is survived by his son, Benjamin Thomas Kinsey Marable; his stepson, Burton Prettyman Short III and his wife Jane, and their children, Mary Katherine, Ellen Short Long (Crawford), Burton Prettyman IV and George Prettyman. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 42 years, Rosalie Sutherland Marable; his daughter, Martha Mitchell Marable; his stepdaughter, Lucinda Wingate Short; his former wife, Martha Kinsey Marable; and his brother, Francis Hoy Marable.
The family would especially like to thank Thomas Greene, Cheryl Gricks, Aja Jones, Michelle Powell, Katie Griffin and Hospice of Virginia for all of their care and devotion over the past two years.
Following a private family burial, there will be a memorial service on Friday, October 20, at Christ and Grace Episcopal Church, 1545 South Sycamore Street, Petersburg, Virginia at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ and Grace Episcopal Church.
