Eunice Mayes Cogbill, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2025, at the age of 94. Born in South Hill, Virginia, Eunice was the daughter of the late Henry and Ida Virginia Crutchfield-Edmonds.
Eunice was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter Cogbill and Arthur Mayes, Sr.; her daughter, Peggy Lee Perkinson; her grandson, Christopher Davidson; her great-granddaughter, Morgan Griffin; and her siblings, Kenneth Edmonds, Vernon Edmonds, Dennis Edmonds, Sonny Edmonds, Bernice Poythress, Lois Queen, and Iris Edmonds.
She is survived by her loving children, Barbara Griffin, Connie Slate (Carl), Arthur "Bubba" Mayes, Jr., Debra Lane, and Sandra Davidson (Roy). Her legacy also lives on through her grandchildren, Barbara Allen, Lilly Perkinson, Peggy Ann Perkinson, Bennie Perkinson, Jr., Sherry Calhoun, Neal Griffin, Michael Griffin, Donnie Slate, Anne Slate, Howie Slate, Anthony Mayes, TJ Sutherland, Jason Sutherland, and Crystal Walker. Additionally, she is survived by a host of great and great-great-grandchildren who brought joy to her life.
Eunice's greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She was a constant source of love, wisdom, and support. Eunice had a passion for life, and her hobbies reflected that spirit. She found great pleasure in bingo and playing card games with her family, and was renowned for her homemade fruit cakes, which she generously shared with those she loved.
A devoted member of the Beach Community Grange and Wesley United Methodist Church, of Matoaca, Eunice touched the lives of many in her church and community. She had a kind and giving nature, always willing to lend a helping hand, and brighten the lives of those around her.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all who have supported them during this difficult time. Eunice will be remembered for her loving heart, her zest for life, and her unwavering devotion to her family.
A visitation to celebrate her life will be held at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home - Petersburg Chapel, on Monday, February 10, 2025, at 10 in the morning, and the memorial service will follow, beginning at 11am. Interment will follow at Blandford Cemetery.
Eunice will be deeply missed but forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
