Eva Chiles Courtney Butterworth, of Dinwiddie, VA, affectionately known as “Miss Eva”, a true southern lady, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2014. Eva was born in Richmond, VA, on April 4, 1923 to the late Mildred and James Alfred Courtney, Jr.; and was also preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Ivan McDowell Butterworth, Sr. better known as “Mr. Mac”; and brother, James Alfred Courtney, III. Eva and Mac were married on October 26, 1946 and moved to Butterworth, VA, to start their new life at Courtworth. She leaves behind her daughter, Mildred Courtney Butterworth Hicks of Richmond, VA, and her husband, Daniel; a son, Ivan McDowell Butterworth, Jr., of Dinwiddie, VA, and his Fiancée, Charlotte Ragsdale. Also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Jo Butterworth Devine, Brittany McDowell Butterworth, and Ellen Chiles Hicks; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Eva was an accomplished pianist and organist and played the organ for church services at Calvary Episcopal Church for over 50 years. The family expresses its sincere appreciation to each of the care givers and friends whom have cared for and assisted her during her declining years. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 17th, 2014, at the Butterworth Family Cemetery, Butterworth, VA.
