Evelyn Isadora Heflin Payne Fenner of Hopewell died on Friday, May 12, 2006 at the age of 84 after an illness. She was the daughter of the late Mary Evelyn Cox and James Otho Heflin of Hopewell. She graduated from James Madison University and enjoyed careers as a mathematics teacher, a spectacular mother and homemaker and a bookkeeper for Southern Bank in Richmond. Her first husband, James W. Payne, Jr. passed away in 1973. She reunited with and married William A. Fenner of Hopewell in 1983. After too short a time of mutual devotion, Mr. Fenner passed away in 1990. Mrs. Fenner was known for her youthful spirit, which she lovingly shared with family and friends, and her enthusiasm about her many personal interests. She was generous, loved home life and simple pleasures, and enjoyed the natural world. In particular, she delighted in roses and songbirds. Mrs. Fenner is survived by her daughter, Mary Shannon Payne; her son, James D. and his wife Gale O. Payne; her stepchildren, Rebecca Fenner Haggerty and husband David and William A. Fenner, Jr. and his wife Val. She was preceded in death by her stepson, Watt Hairston Fenner. Also surviving are Mrs. Fennerâ??s brothers, James and his wife Joan Heflin of Merritt Island, FL and their son James and William Heflin of Lake Wylie, SC. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Robin Overbey Payne and Rainer Fenner Haggerty. In addition, she is survived by her step-granddaughter, Patricia Fenner Morgan and her husband Jim and the latest addition to the family, her step great-granddaughter, Harper Angela Morgan. A graveside service will be held at Merchants Hope Memorial Garden on Tuesday, May 16 at 11:00 A.M. in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Merchants Hope Episcopal Church.
