Evelyn Engleman Mathews, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Russell C. Engleman was born on July 29, 1921 in Lexington, VA and died peacefully at her home in Chester, VA on August 26, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lawrence Grant Mathews. She is survived by her daughters, Carol Mathews Ray of Chester and Bett Mathews Randolph of Richmond; son, Lawrence G. Mathews, Jr. and his wife Carla of Chester; grandchildren, R. Scott Rash and his wife Stacy, Christopher C. Ray, Rob Westbrook and his wife Martha, Elizabeth Westbrook Truluck and her husband Myers, Diana Mathews, Grant Mathews, Sandy Booth; and great-grandchildren, Austin and Brandon Rash, and Molly Westbrook. Mrs. Mathews attended Mary Baldwin College and married Dr. Mathews upon his return from WWII. They were happily married for 64 years and resided in Chester where Dr. Mathews practiced dentistry for over 50 years. Mrs. Mathews was a member of St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church and the Chester Garden Club. The family wishes to express their thanks for all of the care and concern shown by friends and neighbors during her illness. Special thanks to Sabina Lively, for helping to arrange for her care at home, and to Mrs. Mathewâ??s faithful feline companion, Kitty Cat Mathews, for always being a comfort to her. A memorial and celebration of life service for Mrs. Mathews will be held at St. Johnâ??s Episcopal Church in Chester on Monday, September 26 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations are to be made in her name to the Richmond S.P.C.A., 2519 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, VA 23220.
