Ewen Jackson Hill (Jack) passed away on January 21, 2018. He was born in 1929 and raised in Hampton, VA (a small town at the time) where he attended Hampton High School. Jack and all his siblings inherited, from his father, the nickname “Sookie” which followed him to VMI. After graduation from VMI, he was known as Jack to his new friends, but as “Sookie”(to Hampton residents and VMI buddies); he was a devoted husband, father and proud “Keydet.” An avid golfer, he enjoyed many sports but especially football, having played for Hampton High School and VMI, whose teams he supported for many years. He was nominated as the Times Dispatch Lineman of the Week in State Football for his performance in his final college game on Thanksgiving Day, 1950, against Virginia Tech.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, after which he lived in Warrenton, VA where he was an assistant resident engineer for VDOT, until he became a DuPont employee at the Spruance Plant in Chesterfield. He was later employed at James River Products in Richmond.
He was a charitable and fun-loving person who enjoyed people, helping them, making them laugh and offering support. He was loyal to his church, Centenary United Methodist Church in Richmond, where he was a member for over 55 years and served in various capacities. He was also a member of the Chester Civitan Club for over 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence A. and Thomas D. Hill; his sister, Florence Lee Teague; brothers, Thomas D. Hill, Jr. and Richard M. Hill. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Goodwyn Hill; sons, James Christian Hill and husband, Doug Kleffner, of Richmond, and Thomas Bruce Hill and wife, Taren Lynn Hill, of Valrico, FL, as well as his grandchildren, Andrew N. Hill and Grace A. Hill of Wilmington, NC, and step-grandson, Draven Thomas of Florida. He is also survived by a number of loving nieces and nephews.
