Eyre Frances Hudson Oliver, 102, of Hopewell, VA, died Monday, February 13, 2023 at Brighter Living Assistant Living Facility, following a brief illness.
She was born in Clifton Forge, VA and was a resident of Hopewell for the past 96 years. She and her husband were avid tennis players for years but switched to golf which became their passion. She quickly mastered the game and was the Ladies' Golf Champion at Jordon Point Country Club. She and her husband attended the Masters Gold Tournament in Augusta, GA for many years. She was a member of the Appomattox Garden Club and won many Green Ribbons for her flower arrangements and horticulture exhibits. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hopewell and had the honor of knowing every pastor at the church. She taught Sunday school, worked at Vacation Bible School, and served on the Flowering Committee and Finance Board.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Murry (Mutt) L. Oliver; her parents Hansel Marshall and Emma Burks Hudson; a brother, Hansen M. Hudson, Jr.; and sisters, Mary Jane H. Phelps and Barbara H. Graham.
She is survived by her niece and caregiver, Rebecca S. Slagle, and nieces Pamela Graham and Paige Renn.
Gratitude and thanks go to Emma Dennis, her nighttime caregiver for the past month, and to the staff and caregivers at Brighter Living Assisted Living for the wonderful care provided during her 3 years as a resident, especially during this past month.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Monday February 20, 2023 at J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home - Hopewell Chapel. Services will follow at 11:00 am at the funeral home with the Rev. Darrell Boggs, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Internment will be at the Appomattox Cemetery.
