Florence Bishop Sode, 89, a life-long resident of Waverly, died Sunday, September 23, 2007 at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, VA. She was the widow of the late John Edward Sode. Born June 16, 1918 in Waverly, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Noni Westbrook Bishop. Florence had worked as a hairdresser in Waverly for over 50 years. She was an active and devoted member of the Waverly United Methodist Church and long-time president of the United Methodist Women. She served as a volunteer at Southside Regional Medical Center for many years. To know Florence was to appreciate her giving spirit, love for flowers and baking, that she shared with any and everyone that enjoyed her creations through the years.
She is survived by her son, Edward L. Sode and his wife, JoAnn of Greenville NC; two daughters, Theresa S. Tune of North Richland Hills TX and Laurie S. Latham of Waverly; five grandchildren, Dr. Johnathan David Tune and wife, Mary, of Brownsburg IN, William Matthew Tune and wife, Taylor of Weatherford TX, Christopher Robert Tune and wife, Christa of Little Elm TX, Nathan Lloyd Sode of Greenville NC, and Jared Daniel Latham of Waverly; four great-grandchildren, Johnathan Tune, Jr., William Tune, Julian Tune, and Catherine Tune; and a sister, Helen Brown of Portsmouth. Florence was predeceased by two infant sons, John Thomas and John Charles Sode; a grandson, Mark Sode; and son-in-law, Earl Tune.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Waverly United Methodist Church, with Rev. Connie Gibbs officiating. Interment will follow in the Waverly Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Purviance Chapel, J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, Wakefield on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583, Waverly, VA 23890.
